We had to reschedule our speaker Lars Smith, who will now be speaking this Friday, Sep 26.  Mr. Smith will speak on Tiffany v. eBay.

I need a few things from everyone:

  1. Are you available on Friday
    1. If so, does 12-1pm, 3-4pm, or 5-6pm work better for your schedules?  Please respond to this by Wednesday at 9am at the latest to have your schedule considered.

  2. We need to have elections for 3 positions for our organization and we would like to get volunteers for each of the specific positions and a short (SHORT) statement of your 'qualifications', just so people can distinguish the candidates.  You must be a member to qualify.  If you volunteered at the meeting last week, please email the rest of your info that is requested below.  Here are the positions that we're looking for:

                                               i.     Treasurer:  handle the reimbursements, membership dues, and keeping tabs on our newly created bank account.

ii.     SBA Rep:  This person needs to be reliable and available every second Wednesday at 9:40pm to attend the SBA meeting. You will represent IPS and vote in the SBA.

iii.     TIPLA Rep:  This person will make sure that the Toledo IP Law Association knows what UT IPS is doing and will make sure that UT IPS knows what TIPLA is doing.  Should be a good opportunity to network with attorneys that practice IP law in Toledo.  Also a good opportunity to represent UT College of Law to those attorneys.

    1. Please contact me with your name, the position for which you would like to be considered, and a short (SHORT) statement.

  1. Last, but not least, is someone willing to do a quick brief on Tiffany v. eBay? Preferably someone who knows a bit about Trademark law and perhaps has looked into the case for a class.  If we could get that out to people on Thursday before Lars' talk that would be great.  Since we have a number of new members, this should include as much background information on trademark law as is necessary to understand the case.

Thank you all very much

Patent Bar: Not too late to study before the Exam changes!

It shouldn’t be long before the Patent Office announces that they’ll be testing a newer version of the MPEP (8thEdition, Revision 6…rather than the currently tested 8th Edition, Revision 4). We’ve had a good run with Revision 4 (two years of experience, and a good pass rate), so you might want to take the Exam before they start testing those new rules in Revision 6.

We recommend about two months of part-time study (about 20 hours per week) to prepare for the Exam, so it’s not too late to get this done. (The Office has promised us…and so far given…three months notice before they start testing any new rules.)

We have live courses upcoming in New York (October 2-6) and San Francisco (November 19-23). But don’t fret if those dates or locations aren’t good for you: The vast majority of our takers (especially students) opt forhomestudy courses. You get all the same content, and contact with the faculty via voicemail and email to get your questions answered. Students report great success with homestudy courses, as long as they dedicate themselves to really getting through it in a disciplined fashion.

We offer an $800 discount to all students. A good way to save even more money off your course is by becoming a student rep for us at your school.

Come to our Website  or call 888-296-5973 for more information on the Exam or our course.

Free Briefings on the Patent Bar, IP Careers, and More

If you missed our recent free briefing on the Patent Bar, don’t despair: It’s now available (and still free) on our archive, here.

PLI also offers other free briefings on a variety of topics (including some briefings on IP careers for law students).  Just sort by the “Price” column and the free ones will be at the top of the list. (They will say “Launch” in the price column. Click on “Launch” to start them. You will need to create a profile first, if you haven’t done so already.)

Free patent law info and resources

In addition to our still very “hot” blog on our Patent Practice Center we’ve published a number of thought-provoking articles from some of PLI’s top faculty in our other email newsletters:

·        Kathlyn Card Beckles (JPMorgan Chase Bank) considers the benefits of interlocutory appeal for Markman decisionshere.

·        Ethan Horwitz (King & Spalding LLP) examines the continuing conflicts raised by the intersection between contract and patent lawhere.

Here is a quick survey of all of the articles from recent PLI newsletters.
